My painted work is based on the use of mixed media (acrylic, oil, powdered pigments, charcoal, chalk pastel, oil pastel) applied in an expressionistic and fragmented fashion, aka “disrupted realism”. While this approach lets me explore my emotional response to my subjects, it also requires an intense and wordless conversation. Because each piece is a mini-adventure, my failure rate can be frustrating at times…but the successes are worth it.
Horses were my first love, artistically, and I adore color. The sport-horse events, horse ranches and small-town rodeos of Montana and Wyoming give me wonderful fodder to combine those two passions. I spend plenty of time every summer standing in the dust, heat, and light of equine arenas photographing and soaking up the action and intensity.
