The Nicolaysen Art Museum, located in Casper, WY, sent me a letter a few months ago, asking me to give them something for their “Postcards from the Wild Wild West” (PWWW) show/auction. Anything sent would be a complete donation.
Normally, I’m rather against just sending something off as a full donation - I think we artists tend to undermine the value of our work through this generosity. It’s easy for museums and other organizations to profit from our hard work while we think ourselves lucky just to have been noticed and asked for the contribution.
However, in this case, I think “the Nic” is doing it right: they just want something no larger than 5″x7″ and they’ll take care of all the framing. Well, heck - it’s an excuse to play a bit, especially since the Nic has a more contemporary focus. And for some reason, I feel that in these economic times it behooves me to support other artists and arts organizations. We all care deeply about what we do, and since art is a discretionary purchase - and therefore one of the first things to be dropped from someone’s budget - I want to do my part to keep all of us afloat.
In any case - it was a challenge to work so damn small, but I still found a way to put palette knife to Yupo and make something kinda wild happen.

Pretty cool! Honestly, it could be 5×7 feet and it would look great. As a matter of fact…..

Go for it, girl! it would take such inordinate amounts of paint to recreate that look on a scale of feet that it sorta boggles my mind. I haven’t gone there yet - probably because I’m scared how much it would COST (in paint $) to do it. Somehow it’s always easier to be really juicy on a small scale.

Oh, no..I meant YOU. I don’t have room to store any more big paintings. Or galleries for them to go to. But you’re right about how much paint something that big would take.

I just love using the palette knife! Your painting makes me want to touch it and to feel the ridges and chunkiness of the paint. Oh WHY am I here at work at my desk instead of home where I could do a nice small oli painting too!! Dammit!LOL

Lori, your post made me laugh. Go on and give yourself permission to shmear (technical term) some oil paint around! this is on Yupo, which allows nearly infinite re-scraping and re-texturing - easy to get back to almost pure white with a little flick of the knife. Loads of fun.

Again, just some random person in cyberspace talking here, but I really like this piece. This is just me, but the way the paint flows in the mane and travels in short blocks around the neck- excuse me, I don’t know any good artistic term for that and it sounds crass- but it really gives the horse a sense of freedom… perhaps even movement. I don’t really know what I’m talking about but that is what it seems like to me. I also liked your thoughts on charity. You’re right- that is how the “Nic?” or whatever charity should do it. You make a small donation, they make it as hassle free as possible for you. Then you don’t feel hassled to give and end up not giving. Sorry, I’m babling. Anyways…

I wanted to email you and simply tell you that I like your work, but you didn’t provide contact info. (probably a good- and safe- idea.) So anyways… I like your work! No, I don’t… I LOVE your work!
Yes, I’m a dork, but whatever. I thought it was espeacially cool that it was horses that got you into painting. Any drawing abilities I have are horse-related, and even those are pretty if-y. I am really a writer, not a painter, and for me it was the horse that got me into writing. Long story short, I just thought your work was espeacially cool because of this thing you have in common with me. If you hadn’t said that I would have guessed anyways because you have to KNOW horses to paint them so accurately. I have seen many pictures of horses that stamp human charicteristics on them or simply state them as an object… a simple noun with no personality or purpose other than to serve humans. Your paintings give the horse a life of its own, and they are gorgeously accurate… not badly un-proportioned like some artists tend to do. It spills into your other paintings, too. Literally, several of your paintings took my breath away and I was just viewing the thumnail of it online! I’ve gotta try to save and convince my parents to let me get one, even if it takes me ten years. Maybe I should just move to Montana… developments are scaring away all the animals here in Pennsylvania. God, even I can remember seeing bobcat, raccon and deer in the exact spot they are building a new Walmart. It wasn’t ten years ago… I couldn’t have been that old, but I still remember because we harldy ever see animals around here anymore (except deer) and if we do it makes the front page of our newspaper. If I could buy your prints, I think I might bring a little bit of the spirit of the wild back to our home. And of course, a large, (almost) living collection of the equine part of the animalia kingdom. I would gladly strip my walls of their horse posters in exchange for a breathtaking painting like one of yours. Just because I can’t DO art doesn’t mean I can’t LIKE it! I’m rambling again, so I’ll shut up now. Sorry.

Also I believe that mesothelioma is a scarce form of cancers that is often found in all those previously familiar with asbestos. Cancerous cellular material form in the mesothelium, which is a protective lining that covers a lot of the body’s internal organs. These cells generally form inside the lining in the lungs, abdomen, or the sac which actually encircles one’s heart. Thanks for discussing your ideas.
