My “Capturing the Essence” workshop at Triple D Game Farm in Kalispell took place Feb 5 - 8. Rather than bore everyone trying to describe it all, I’m going to operate on the “picture is worth a thousand words” principle. Clearly, there was a lot of suffering going on.

Carrie - we mostly had lovely light, some sun, plenty of ice fog, though Friday was freezing rain and so icy and dangerous we didn’t drive to film sites - too dangerous, schools were closed, etc.
Animals in each picture are as follows:
cougar - Jewel (we had both Jewel and Tillie working together)
coyotes - Bailey and Otis, brother and sister
red foxes - Kit and Jojo; Jojo was in heat, Kit sniffed her butt, she turned around and *nailed* him, and it was off to the races
Siberian lynx - Toby (what a nutjob! great action photos of him!)
wolf - Lakota
tiger - Atticus
snow leopard - Dot
Susan - not sure I remember a Sophie bobcat…hmm…

I bet having photos like that makes it really hard to do good paintings.
I don’t know how you do it.
I mean, the lighting just sucks (poor contrast and no dramatic shadows or anything), no trees or rocks or anything for background and the animals are all just sitting around in boring poses like they would in a cage at the zoo.

Yep, like I said….a lot of suffering was going on. I’ve come to realize the winter workshops are my favorite - the snow, the animal coats, cougars/foxes/wolves all in heat so interesting behaviors…and Kathleen makes us chili or something else yummy every day for lunch. And we start much later in the morning, since daylight comes late - no getting up at 5:30 AM. Ahhhhhhh….

There was a young bobcat named Sophie when I took the workshop. You can see her transplanted to a Yellowstone setting on the homepage of my website.

“foxes/wolves all in heat so interesting behaviors…and Kathleen makes us chili”
But Kathleen seemed to be such a warm person to me.
On a more serious note:
‘Chili and in heat’ might be a good subtitle for your winter workshop.

Pardon me while I wipe the drool off my chin! One of your winter workshops is definitely in my five-year plan!

Larry - LOL - great idea for a winter workshop subtitle! (still chuckling…)
Tania - we’d look forward to having you whenever you can make it! Don’t tell the summer workshop folks - but I think the winter ones are my favorite. The pace is more relaxed (though I still crack the whip hard on all the art exercises!) and the animals are SO beautiful, the snowy settings SO graphic… OK, back to my sketchbook! Lots of inspiration from the workshop.

Having been to 2 summer and 2 winter workshops - I’m a gluten for Julie’s punishment - I have to say I’m more partial to the winter. There’s just something about the sunlight through ice fog (delicious) and all of that gorgeous winter fur. No mosquitoes. Animals are not panting in photos, etc. However….you simply cannot beat a Julie workshop at Triple D no matter what time of year! Yup! Conditions are so bad I’ll just have to go back again!

I’m just some random person who came across your site while searching “horses” on the web, and BOY am I impressed! I’ve always wanted to be able to get my thoughts and ideas down in the form of visual art, but I can’t really. I’m more of a writer in that area, but that makes me all the more impressed when I look at your paintings and stuff. The photographs you take are incredible as well… these are like, action shots of animals that I would never DREAM of being able to get. Maybe this is a stupid idea since I am no connisuer of art or anything, but have you ever considered selling your photographs as well? If I had money, I would definitely buy some (of your photos). Anyways, there is alot of photography I’ve seen for sale online that isn’t half as good as yours. This isn’t to say I don’t absoulutley LOVE your paintings, of course!
