This report comes from Susan Fox, who - along with many other artists - had planned to participate in this show, which was to be hung at the Cow Palace (Bay Area, CA).
It would appear that the organizers of the show were either delusional or deliberately dishonest. The show was actually held, but show artists have had problems with:
- Getting their artwork returned
- Dirty or damaged artwork when it is returned
- Art not in original packing (some have lost expensive Airfloat boxes)
…among other issues. Susan has more on her blog. In the meantime, stay very far away from:
- Grand National Artist’s Society
- Santa Barbara Fiesta (contact the organizers for current info on who is running the show)
If you were involved in any of these, or know an artist who was, be sure to email this person.

Thanks Julie, for posting about this. All of us involved in this fiasco are hoping that the management of the Cow Palace will be able to revive the show next year with a different person in charge who knows what they are doing. It’s a sure bet the current person won’t be allowed anywhere near the place.

For some reason, after reading that, I get this picture in my mind of a cowhand who just “boxed up” a raging bull boxing up fine art paintings — and I can only cringe at the thought of what the “dirt” on the returned artwork was.
I hate to say it, but it sounds like they treat fine art like they treat their livestock.

Well, Larry, you’ve got it exactly. There was a large stall area adjacent to the show. And a number of the artist’s dogs have been absolutely riveted by some of the returned crates. One artist posted a photo on the private forum of her dog laying on the battered, stinky crate. She said that she was just going to give it to him to tear apart. Close to half the art was “displayed” on hay bales, also. MIndblowing, uh.

Susan:
look on the bright side. At least they did not display the paintings as they did the flowers for the SF Garden Show at the Cow Palace
On the other hand, it does undoubtedly keep the flowers fresh…

Words fail me (and that doesn’t happen very often).

I shipped my paintings all the way from England. I was not expecting my art to be wedged between two bales of hay, on the floor. I still have no idea where my art is? let alone the state of it if and when it gets returned!
I would advise all artists not to ever work with this woman if they expect their art to be dealt with respect, sold (she wasnt ever around to sell anything) or returned safely.
